Information about the Title One Program.

At Mt. Erie Elementary we serve the Title One Reading Students and Resource students in small flexible ability groups. What does that mean for your child? It means that your student is seen at least four days a week for 30 to 40 minutes, in a group with four to six other students that are all reading and writing at about the same level. As your student progresses they are moved to the next leveled group. In this manner your student is always enjoying instruction at their level. As students progress through the year it is our hope that they will no longer require our services. We miss each student that is exited from our program, but we rejoice with their success. Below you will find some information that may help you understand our program and our goals. Please feel free to contact us anytime you have questions or concerns. We are here to provide you with any assistance you need in order help your student succeed in school. We also have an extensive parent resource library that you may enjoy looking through.

Reading Counts
The Reading Counts program is an independent reading challenge for students in grades 3-6. Students check books out through the School Library or the Title One room. The books must be on the Reading Counts list, available in the Library and Title One Room. When the student completes the book they inform the Title One instructor and are allowed to take a short comprehension test on the computer. As they pass tests they earn incentives: Sweets, Treasure Box, Milkshakes at lunch, Fast Food Coupons or a Bowling/Swimming Coupon. Students who participate in this program will also be invited to end of the year pizza party during their regular lunch period. Students in First Grade are expected to participate in their Classroom Reading Goals. They will also be invited to the pizza party.

Extended Day Program
Students in Fifth and Sixth Grade are currently served in our extended day program. Students come to school Monday-Friday at 8:00a.m. They meet with their instructor in small groups for forty-five minutes. Each small group spends time on reading and writing development. Students are required to attend the program consistently and be on time. Thursday mornings students can use this time to work on homework or get help on any subject that they are struggling with in class. If students do not bring work with them on Thursdays then they read Reading Counts books and take comprehension quizzes on the computer.
The early morning program was designed to give maximum support to students in the upper grades. It provides students with the help that they need, however does not pull them out of their classes during the day. This seems to help students as peer issues become very influential.
If your student needs a ride to this program just let us know—There is a bus route specially designed for participants in this program.

The Program
The Title 1 Reading program has been developed to include direct instruction in phonics, comprehension skills, grammar, and various forms of writing. If you ever wonder exactly what the materials include please drop in and we would be happy to show you the texts we use to teach your student.

Resources
The Title 1 library is an extension of our schools library. Books available in the Title 1 resource room are designated with a T1 call number and can be searched using the same online catalog program. To see what is available, access the online catalog.
